Learning to Cook

Fabienne Théorêt
March 7, 2017

"We're making Indian corn dogs."

Fabienne Théoret, Anishinabe

Food plays an important part in the social life of Indigenous communities. It contributes to the joy and success of get-togethers and plays a role in the transmission of knowledge. Mothers and grandmothers teach younger children how to cook the meat from the woods the hunters bring. They also prepare more contemporary recipes. The dishes prepared collectively are then taken home where they are enjoyed by families who taste the same flavours that their ancestors enjoyed.
