The Earth Speaks

Shana G. St-Onge. Utshekatakuss Vollant Blacksmith
September 20, 2017
Uashat mak Mani-Utenam

Shana G. St-Onge loves archaeology. She conducts excavations near the Old Trading Post, a traditional place for exchanges between Indigenous people and Non-Natives. Just like she was taught, she delineated a square of land. With her small broom, she carefully removes layers of soil, like so many layers of history. She writes her discoveries in a notebook: quartz, pearls, pipe pieces, gunflint, forged nails... Shana loves what she does. She has nothing to prove. The Earth speaks for history.

Transcript

In a small clearing, among mostly coniferous trees, the ground has a geometric layout. Wooden posts support taut ropes. Some orange ribbons are attached to the ropes or the ground. The sun’s rays shine through the branches. A young woman is kneeling on the ground. She’s taking notes in a notebook on a blue bag. Next to her lie a pair of gloves, a small broom and a dustpan. At her side, a young man is sitting on the ground. He’s scraping the ground with a small shovel, carefully looking at the soil in his hands and putting it in a bucket. They’re discussing.
