Welcome to "Canadian Tire"!

Noah Anogak. A garbage collector. A dump user
May 24, 2017
Kangiqsujuaq

There are no blue bins in Kangiqsujuaq, no selective collections, no recycling centres. What goes up north stays north, except for the tires and vehicle batteries that boats bring back once a year. Outside the village, on the road to Akulivik, all kinds of garbage accumulate in the dump that people call "Canadian Tire". Open to the winds and open to all, everyone takes what they need. This is how objects from the South are given a second life.

Transcript

In the middle of the Kangiqsujuaq dump, various objects litter the snow-covered ground. A barrier of burnt waste is more than two metres high by fifty metres wide. A red pickup truck is parked nearby. A yellow garbage truck arrives at the site, turns around and backs up towards the garbage. Two men get out of the truck and move to the rear of the vehicle that’s opening. The waste is automatically ejected from the truck. A grey pickup truck arrives at the site and stops along the perimeter. Before leaving, a man throws various items on top of the garbage already present. The yellow truck moves forward, the rear door closes and then it leaves.
