Learning to Cook

Fabienne Théorêt
March 7, 2017
Val-d'Or

"We're making Indian corn dogs."

Fabienne Théoret, Anishinabe

Food plays an important part in the social life of Indigenous communities. It contributes to the joy and success of get-togethers and plays a role in the transmission of knowledge. Mothers and grandmothers teach younger children how to cook the meat from the woods the hunters bring. They also prepare more contemporary recipes. The dishes prepared collectively are then taken home where they are enjoyed by families who taste the same flavours that their ancestors enjoyed.

Transcript

In the Kinawit Cultural facility building, in an open space near the kitchen, a young woman is surrounded, on one side, by many people busy cooking and, on the other side, by a few people sitting at tables. Coats were left on backs of chair. A few bags are also scattered on tables. The young woman is dressed in a white apron, a jean jacket and a black tuque. She’s wearing glasses.

Fabienne

Uh... Hello! I'm Fabienne and here we are in Kinawit. Uh... It's a cultural meeting centre. And, uh, today, well, we’re eating wild meat and traditional Indigenous breads.

So, right there, we're making Indian pogos. And here we’re preparing a beaver. Uh...we're also going to have caribou, uh... We also have moose. And, uh, later we're going to get some wabous, hares from the snares in the woods right, right over there, by the windows or, uh... I think there are some there too.

But, uh, that's it.
