Kiuna — Celebrating the Future

Guests of the 5th anniversary of the Kiuna Institution
September 27, 2016
Odanak

September 27, 2016. This is the fifth anniversary of the Kiuna Institution, the only post-secondary institution in Quebec designed by and for First Nations. Students, parents, staff and supporters discuss. A man puts a little tobacco in the fire as an offering. We’re getting ready to serve sagamité. As the result of a 20-year self-determination process, the college's objective is to enable the young people who attend it to become citizens who are proud of their culture, aware of their history and eager to get involved in their community. Today, we’re not just celebrating the past, we’re also celebrating the future.

Transcript

Near the fire area on the Kiuna Institution site, people have gathered together to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the institution. The fire area consists of long wooden poles arranged in a conical tent structure. A fire is burning. Gravel paths divide the grassy grounds. A tent was installed for the occasion. Five types of traditional and contemporary Indigenous shelters and dwellings are located on the site. People are sitting on wooden benches around the fire. Others are standing. People are talking, a buffet is served. Some people are eating. Students are wearing orange t-shirts to honour students of Indigenous residential schools.
