Gatherings at Transparent Lake

Fabienne Théorêt. Martin Gunn
March 6, 2017
Transparent Lake

"As a group, we went fishing right on the other side of the point."

Martin Gunn, Anishinabe

The Kitcisakik community built a lodge on the tip of Transparent Lake to allow its members to gather or recharge their batteries, with mutual respect and in harmony with Mother Earth. The facility is also used to welcome tourists who come to practise traditional activities while in direct contact with the population. In winter, the site’s an ideal location for ice fishing. This is where we meet Fabienne Théorêt and Martin Gunn.

Transcript

On a frozen lake, two people stand near a snowmobile and a sled. The sky, rather cloudy, lets a few rays of sunshine pass through. Trees are omnipresent all around the lake. On the snow, the tracks of both people and the snowmobile are visible. The young girl is wearing orange snow pants, a black and white coat, a grey tuque, black mittens and glasses. Her companion is wearing a black winter suit with purple, yellow, black and white fabric inserts. He’s also wearing a black tuque and grey mittens.

Fabienne

Okay! Okay! Okay! So, do you want to start? Okay! So, one, two, three, go!

Martin Gunn

Hello! I'm Martin Gunn. I come from Kitcisakik. Uh... I'm currently a tour guide for the community. For the past 10 years in fact. I'm with… a charming young lady...

Fabienne

Hello! Uh....My name is Fabienne. I'm, uh, Métis, and I come from the Lac-Simon community. Uh, and that's it. I... Well, here we’re at Transparent Lake and, uh, today we're going ice fishing. So... Usually we go ice fishing there...

Fabienne heads straight ahead to show where she fishes.

Martin Gunn

That's it.

Fabienne

So, over there is where we fish... And, uh, the whole gang, uh, all the youth of Kitcisakik, we're going to go there and we'll make holes... We'll go fishing all together... Uh... and, uh, ice fishing is all about sitting down around the hole and waiting for the fish to bite. And, uh... It's really fun though, all together. We make conversation, and it's relaxing. Uh… We gaze up at the sky, and when fish bite, it's always fun to take the fish out of the water and play with its heart. Hmm! And that's it.

Martin Gunn

As for me, my part, I might add a little something. Gang, here, we're at Transparent, and just over there, at the corner, in back, we have a cottage that we opened in 2012. It's brand new. It's not even 10 years old.

Martin also moves forward to indicate the place he’s talking about.

So... Well, on the one hand, of course... At first, we built this, this project, in order to allow people to replenish spirit, and share during activities, like today’s ice fishing activity. Tomorrow, uh, the day after tomorrow, well, there will also be two specific activity days.

Tomorrow is for women, and, uh, the day after tomorrow, well, it will be, uh... for young people. They’re two different parts. But, nevertheless, there’s always a friendly touch, a unifying aspect, always based on mutual respect likewise with Mother Earth. That’s the aspect we’re particularly aiming for. Despite everything, there have recently been, uh, big events, uh, not necessarily joyful, for both women and us men. So, it means that, well, it's all about sticking together, and getting there together.

With regards to the touristic aspect, I've been doing this for 10 years. And, uh, during our last group, well, of course... It was the Cégep Saint-Laurent that came here. This dates back about 5 years. We went fishing right there, as you can see, right on the other side of the point here.

We went there, and well, we came through that side. You see: a small hole, a curve through the treetops. It's right there, right across, behind the snowmobile and the sled. So that, that was our point of entry.

And then right there, we had our cabin. Which was heated, just enough to prevent from freezing, foot frostbite. So, regarding that well, we always make do with what we have, with the means at our disposal. You always have to have… a lot of resourcefulness in the forest because, you never know what can happen. When was the last time you came here Fabienne?

Fabienne

Well, the last time I was here... I came with my family, uh, on Ski-Doo. We were three Ski-Doos. My mushum, his best friend, my mother, my father, and my little brother, and my little dog, a shih tzu. It didn't go well. We spent a day and a half just fishing and talking, eating candy. But we didn't catch anything, but it was fun anyway. So, that’s it.

Martin Gunn

Good! So, in that respect, you have fond memories.

Fabienne

Yes!

Martin Gunn

Oh! Well, that's good! That's priceless, isn't it?

Fabienne

Yeah. It lasts a lifetime.

Martin Gunn

As for me, well, I arrived here as usual, on Ski-Doo. Of course, that’s how it was the previous time as well. We came by Ski-Doo. So much for that, well... You know, some people pay a fortune [for that kinf of experience]! Huh, Fabienne?

Fabienne

Yeah.
