Coming Back from Fishing

Adamie Philie. Pierre Philie. Jessica Arngaq
May 21, 2017
Kangiqsujuaq

Every year, the north wind sweeps over the tracks in the snow and each year, they are rebuilt as people move. It’s nature’s cycle, the millennial lesson of land use. We have to adapt. The sled is tied to the snowmobile to reach the ice fishing sites. We spend several days there, in complete autonomy, to bring back dozens and dozens of fish that we’ll dry for conservation. Adamie Phillie's mother has just returned.

Transcript

On the frozen bay of Kangiqsujuaq. There are houses and other dwellings near the shore, where snowmobiles and sleds are parked. The clouds are so low that they hide certain mountaintops. The clouds give way to a glimpse of sunlight and blue sky. A snowmobile pulling a sled coming from the far end of the bay passes by the camera.

Crossfade transition.

The snowmobile has stopped near the road. Two men help the snowmobiler to carry the contents of the sled into the rear open space of a red pickup parked next to it. When the sled is empty, the two men back up the snowmobile and one of them parks it further away. The other one is discussing with the snowmobiler. When the first man returns, they all head for the truck.
