Spying on the Other World

Jani Bellefleur-Kaltush. Eruoma Awashish. Meky Ottawa
November 15, 2017
Montreal

What happens when contemporary art and sacred Indigenous practices join forces? At the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Jani Bellefleur-Kaltush, Eruoma Awashish and Meky Ottawa presented Kushapetshekan/Kosipitcikan/Épier l'autre monde. In a circular device shaped like a tent, images were displayed with songs, drums and a woman's breath. An immersive experience reminiscent of a ritual traditionally reserved for men. How would the elders have perceived this work?

Transcript

Inside a cylindrical structure with a diameter measuring a few metres, everything is very dark. Several spots of light are visible above the camera. Video images are projected on the inside surface of the installation.
